Can it really be 21 years. Time flies by so fast. It seems it was just a moment ago that she was running around the house and playing on her favorite swing in the back yard.
She was a blessing and I almost lost my life in giving birth to her, but thank goodness we both made it.
Happy Birthday Allie! Oh and behave tonight.

How to find inspiration.

With the Bead Soup Blog hop coming up I thought it might be a good to discuss how do you find or kick your creativity in gear.
I always want to put my best foot forward when creating for the Blog Hop. I want to make sure that my partner is happy with the effort I put forth and I want to be proud of my work.

With that being said sometimes I get stuck. Nothing comes to mind and I just sit looking at my pile of beads and wonder what to do. When I first started making beads I got a blank inspiration book. When I would see something in a magazine I would cut it our and glue it in my book. When I saw something that gave me an idea I would sketch it out. I don't know how many times I have had an idea and forgot to put it in my book and it just slipped out of my head. ARggg.

Another thing I do is to Google like crazy. Things like Jewelry of the 1920's, or Jewelry of the 17th century. Try it. Think of other searches you can do.

I also look though catalogs like the Sundance Catalog. It can inspire you and also let you see what the current trends might be. J Jill is another good catalog to browse.

Can't wait to see what beautiful beads I get from my partner and hopefully find some great inspiration.

I knew about Melanie and Earthenwood Studio and always loved her work. I mean look at this!
I love this owl and the shape is spot on. Make sure you stop by her shop and take a look around. She has beautiful things.

Lots of new Beads!

For a long time now I have been lusting over the glass heart pendants made by the boro workers and from a guy named Brent . They always are so beautiful, but I will not start to learn another glass, AGAIN. I already have too much glass. So I played around and came up with these lovely glass pendants. They are super fun to make and of course I am obsessed. Go figure.

I made some with a glass called Luna and then my favorite silver glass called Clio. I am super psyched they turned out so cool. My mind is going crazy thinking of all the ways to change them up.

Off course last but not least a new take on the beloved Pod. I use the same technique I used for the hearts and incorporated it into a Pod. It turned out sick (means good according to my hip daughter).

Yipeeee Bead & Button class registration is now open . It really has the best Bead Design, PMC, Metal, Mixed Media, Glass Beadmaking, Seed Bead classes ever. You just can't beat it. The teachers are top notch and I wish I had time to take some classes myself. If you are considering going or taking classes, just go ahead and do it. You won't be sorry.

Last year I got to meet a couple of my Blogger friends and this year I hope to meet up with some more. It's great to have an online relationship and then get to meet the people in person.

A Day in the Glass Studio

I thought you guys might like to see some pictures of our cold shop at the studio I work at. Cold working is pretty important to glass workers. We can grind, cut and polish to do a variety of things.

These pieces were made by my boss in the hotshop. After I cut, grind and polish them they will be for a local University and used as awards. You can see the tops are all broken and I need to cut them to an angle.

Next I have to cut of the tops with a wet saw. Super important to wear safety glasses! I had to wear a big rubber smock. I swear I looked like Dexter.

On to the lap wheel where I have to grind the tops of the vases to an angle and smooth out the coarse cut.

You have to hang on tight when using the wheel. The first time I used the grinding wheel the glass slipped out of my hands and smashed on the wall. Luckily I was the only one in the shop at the time. Scary!

Finally I have to grind the bottoms flat so they stand up nice and straight and not lean forward or backward.

Tomorrow I have to use a finer grit on the wheel then on the the belt sander then a final polish.
So that was my day! Hope yours was good.

Damn you Nook and Robert Dancik

I got a Nook for Christmas. I wrestled back and forth on getting one. I am an old fashion kind of gal. I was making a stand. I loved the feel of a book, loved to turn the pages and the smell. Yes new books smell.

I was worried that the book would go by the wayside and become a thing of the past. I kept seeing some futuristic short stories by Ray Bradbury were there were no books left in the world.

Ok I broke. I am doing the walk of shame. I haven't had my nose out of it since I got it. Of course it might have something to do with what I am reading. I finished The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and my first purchase was the next in the series The Girl Who Played With Fire. I finished it in no time flat, and onto the next one.

Then another favorite present was Robert Dancik's book Amulets and Talismans. Can you say yummy. Robert spoke at the Gathering convention this summer for the ISGB. He was so informative and such a great speaker that I couldn't wait to get his book. I am still going over every inch and hoping to somehow translate it into my beads. We will see.
Off to read some more....fricken nook.

One of my favorite things I have done in the Blog world was to sign up for Lori's Bead Soup. I was just new to blogging and wanted to meet new bloggers and make some new friends. It really was one of the best things I could have done. I was lucky that Lori already knew my beads and knew who I was. It was like meeting an old friend.By chance we were matched up and we had a blast.
I met some great and talented artists I got to see some beautiful work and been inspired to try new things.

Every year I always seem behind at Christmas time. I haven't made any cookies, I am behind of gifts, the house is a mess, and I am scrambling last minute.But this year I got this.
I made Christmas cookies with my daughter, I super cleaned the house, I wrapped all the gifts, and I am in the Christmas mood.

I have my whole family with us this year. We also spent Thanksgiving together and it was wonderful. Lots of laughs and love. Now we will all be together Christmas. It won't happen that often so I made sure to carve out time for getting ready. I think it will be lovely.

I hope that each and everyone of you have a wonderful Christmas, wither it is with family, or just a few friends.

How lucky am I.

So working in a glass studio is very cool. I am surrounded by glass and glass artists everyday. What others would kill to have the opportunity to do I take for granted. Our hotshop is one of the best in the country. It's very cool.

Today I was hanging out in the hot shop talking to the blowers and asked one of our artist if I could help him out making ornaments. So I watched him take small gathers of glass out of the furnace to add to the ornament to make the loop on top. Easy enough...not. But I had a blast.

Dang it is HOT and I was just doing simple easy stuff. There are so many things to remember but really its the same thing in beadmaking. It's a lot of stuff to remember.

So long story short, maybe, just maybe I will take a class. Maybe.

I remember growing up with joyous memories of Christmas. Every Christmas Eve the neighborhood had a Christmas caroling party and all the Dads took the kids out (Moms had to stay home so we could sing to someone)and we would sing our hearts out. To this day I know the words by heart to many Christmas carols. Oh Holy Night, We Three Kings, Away in the Manger. The Dads used to say they saw Santa in the sky and we would try as hard as we could to see the red nose on Rudolf.

We would all meet at the Watt's house and have Christmas cookies, hot chocolate, candy, food and fun! Every year we got older and some moved away but we always made it back to the Watt's.

Later it was just our family and it grew as we got married and had kids. Those were wonderful times too. My Dad (Papa Lou) would write a scavenger hunt for each one of the grandkids and they would race around the house looking for their presents. We also had a glass Pickle ornament ( and old German tradition) something my kids still remember.

I am lucky I get that. Lately our Christmas's have changed. My Mom and Sister are no longer with us. New people have entered our lives, things change. But guess what we are forming new traditions, forming new relationships and choosing to work at making Christmas special. I want it to be good, so I will make it good.
By no means is my family perfect. We have had our problems, conflicts, fights, but we want it to work, so it does.
Self fulfilling prophecy's do exist.

I hear so many people say "I hate Christmas". They tire at putting up decorations, being alone, not having family near, having dysfunctional families, making it impossible to enjoy the season, and waiting for it to be done.

May I make some suggestions? Get involved, volunteer, find someone who feels the same, join a church group, in other words make your own joy. Seek it out. Make it work.

I am excited and joyous about Christmas. I was the year after my Mom died, the year after I lost my sister to cancer, the year we had little to no money, the year it was just us, the year it was all of us.

Like I need another thing to do. I was out shopping yesterday for last minute gifts and saw these cute blankets at Pier One. They were $65
and I thought hummm, I think I could make those myself.
So now I have blankets, gloves, and hats. Luckily I already have tons of felting material so stay tuned.
I think this is going to get fun. Why do I do this to myself......

I got some cool stuff to show you! First are these stinken cute Red Roof Tile Podlets. They are plump and the color is rich and beautiful. I love making these beads. They are so much fun to handle. Lots of depth and texture. Just listed these guys.

Next is my attempt at cute. I don't do "cute" too often but I had so much fun making this guy I think I have to make more. I made a bunch for work and they all sold so I made some more. This little guy is on my Etsy store. He will have a bail so you can just slip him on a chain or ribbon.

Some of you know that I contributed a bead for Kerry Bogart's Totally Twisted book. Last week I had a call from a customer in LA asking if I could send her a bead similar to the one in the book so she could make the necklace. I can't believe I don't have any listed on my Etsy so I have listed a couple at really good prices.

Next I listed some more of my bead sets. Each bead is super cute and the whole set will make a fantastic bracelet. I love these bead sets. They pop with color and I also lowered the price from $35.00 to $30.00.

I grow so weary.

Sometimes it's hard to keep pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and tell yourself that you and your work are worthy. Everyday lately I feel like I need to justify my artistic existence or worth. I know that I am worthy and my art is worthy, it's just tiring to keep having to justify it to others. When money is involved it gets even harder.
Why is it that if you make more money it means that your work is more important. To me it means that you have good work, but also you have great skills at promotion, been in the right place at the right time, and have been just plain lucky.
Gosh I know so many artists who should be selling the crap out of their stuff because it rocks, but because they are not good at self promotion, or haven't been recognized by the "right' people, or a ton of other things, they just fall in the cracks.
Sometimes I feel like I am in a crack... so I am going to take the day to finish decorating the house for Christmas, make some beads, take pictures of my super cute snowman and load some stuff on my Etsy store.

Influences and asking permission

At work we are putting out tons of work for the Christmas rush. I have my work plus I am putting out "cutsie" work for a fast and easy sale. I have a friend who was making the cutest mittens and I wanted to try them out myself. So I called her and asked permission to make some. She was gracious and said of course, but to try and make them unique to my style and not exactly like hers.

So I played around with it came up with a style totally my own.
If she had said no I would have been OK with that, but because she asked me to push myself and make them unique I was able to create without feeling like I had stolen her idea.

There are times when you want to hold onto an idea and that is fine. I have not taught my Pod bead yet. I wanted to take time with it and explore all the possibilities of it. But now I am ready to start teaching it. I have a feeling that other artists will take my idea and come up with something totally unique to them.

There have been plenty of times when I have asked permission from artists to play with an idea of theirs. Everyone has been gracious and said "go for it". Eventually I would change and adapt that idea and make it my own. When I had achieved the final look I asked permission once again. Then I felt I could sell it and show it to others.

As an artist it is always best to ask permission first. Many times the artist will be fine with it, but if you don't ask first it's not cool.
I think ideas are not possessions. There are many times where two artist have come up with the same idea purely on their own, not knowing the other had the same idea. Can one really lay claim to it? Not really. It is better to continue your idea and just move forward.

It is when you have knowingly seen an idea and copied it without giving credit to the artist or asked permission that causes hard feelings. Always thinking of the artist first is usually the best way to go. The old saying "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you" really is true.

I made some more Podlets. I think I am officially back in love with them. The shapes, textures, colors and depth really are so cool. These are off for a special project that I hope will work out. I am super excited about it. I just have to wait to see if it really is going to happen. I promise to make a bunch for my Etsy site. I will have sets and pairs just give me a couple of days.

I am spending the day in my "comfy" clothes. I have tons of findings, beads, sari silk, wire, tools, just waiting for me to make some stuff. I am headed off to Chicago and will take some things up for a shop to consign.

Well I got my Sari Silk Ribbon from Designtalentedone. Her ribbons are great and so many colors to choose from. I because obsessed with this style of bracelet and of course made a bunch up. I am taking them into work and see how they go. Yummy.

Ok and guess what, got my postcards. They turned out great and i am so excited I have a new card to include in all my Etsy sales. They were a lot of work. What the heck happened to November? It was just Oct. I mean fricken Thanksgiving is next week. Do you know what that means, Christmas is just right around the corner. ARGGGGG.
Really I need to get myself together. We are traveling to Chicago to have Thanksgiving with my sister. We have a whopping 30 people for dinner.
My family has dwindled down to just 3. We lost my Mom 9 years ago and my sister 4. So holidays can be tough. Not a lot of family left and with my sister in Chicago it's just my family and my Dad. It's a big change from Big holiday celebrations to small ones. Not a change It gets kind-of lonely. So this Thanksgiving will be joyous and so much fun.
Off to spend the whole day on the torch. Got tons of beads to make.

I have finally run out of postcards. This is the front of my new card. I love it. It's one of my favorite photos. I like to include a card with a note in each transaction.
It took forever to get them ordered. I used Overnight Prints and I wish I could tell you it was easy, but it wasn't. Files had to be adjusted, several calls to customer service had to be made, but finally I got it done. I am not sure if I got a good deal but several people have used them and they said the quality was good. Keep you fingers crossed.
Now I need new cute tissue, cute organza bags etc. Anyone have a good source for this stuff?
When Lori of Pretty Things has her Bead Soup people show the cutest packages that they receive. I got to step up my game. When I was at Meet the Teachers at Bead & Button I thought "If I sell just a little bit I will be happy" You know the mind set. Underestimate so you won't be disappointed. Well everyone was so wonderful and I had a great show, BUT ran out of everything. By the end I was packing beads in sad little plastic bags with sad tissue. I promised myself not to do that again. I want to give everyone a cute little package with their purchase. My customers deserve it!

I found the best Recycled Sari fiber from a great Etsy store called
Designtalentedone. I am in love with these Sari Bracelets that I saw on
Shannon LeVart's Etsy site. She is taking a little break from her shop so hopefully when she gets back you can purchase her tutorial on how to make these beautiful bracelets.
Of course I have some other ideas on how to change these up and use my lampwork beads. I am hoping to use those cute little drops I posted a couple of days ago. Plus I made a bunch of big hole beads to slip on instead of stones.

Deadlines and Musings

I have some cool stuff coming down the pipe. I really need to put my head down and work on the torch. I have new glass, ideas and probably some new obsession to work out.
I have a friend who is struggling with finding inspiration and ideas. Sometimes its good to just step away from the glass and just relax. I think when you force work it shows.
I have some new Clio melons that I am listing. The other Melon beads on my Etsy have TONS of views and everyone likes them but they are just sitting there. Sometimes Etsy just confuses the heck out of me.

I spent the weekend trying to figure out how to use the new Dew Drops that I have been making like a fiend. It took a while but I am happy with the first attempt. I have some other ideas. This idea was a nice simple one. I used those new copper rings I got at the show a couple weekends ago.
I of course made some more...go figure...but these are all Clio glass and they are so pretty in person. Have them up on my Etsy site so take a look.

Ok so the first set went really fast! (thanks Alice!) so I finally got around to listing three more sets.
I am playing around with how I want to use these bad boys. So I am doing a trial and error just seeing how they lay. I will make sure to post my attempts.

My Day Out

I had a great day at a local bead show last week. I went with two of my friends and we had a nice lunch before and then hit the show. I was on the look out for some nice chain but couldn't find what I really wanted.

My first stop was Silk Road Treasure to get this great heat treated copper. These large copper
rings are so great. I see so many things I can do with them. Then I got my favorite spacers. I use the heck out of these things. They look great with my Clio beads.

Then I got some small little spacers to use on earrings. Next I was on to some stones. I usually get more earthy style but I did find one strand of some faceted beads.

I love the color and couldn't resist. Then some really cool coin agate beads, and then some beautiful green pleated beads. I had made some copper green pleated beads and I thought they would look great together. But I decided to put 7 of these beautiful beads on my Etsy site for sale so grab them. I think they are so cool. I love how they have such depth and texture.

I do love a good bead show. This one was OK, but once you have been to Tucson and Bead and Button everything pales in comparison.
I can't wait until Bead and Button. A bunch of friends got into the show so it's going to be even better than last year!

New Sweet Little Beads

I was looking around on LE (it's a forum for beadmakers). There was a questions about how to make a certain type of drop bead. Well I decided to make a couple and then it started.
I now make as many as I can when I sit down at the torch. They are colorful, cute and easy as pie to make. Plus I can sell them for a good price. So I get to use the expensive silver glass and see all the colors come out. I hope you

Project Accessory.

I know a lot of us have been waiting for this show. It's kind of right up our alley. I was wondering how it was going to be. Would it work? Well it sure does. I love to see the artists work though a project and how they come up with ideas. It's going to be nice to listen to the judges and see how they think.
I think it's good to push the limits of your abilities. Do you have the chops in the real world?

Ahh fall. I love it. It is my favorite time of year. Always has been. I got married in the fall. I really can't for the life of me understand how anyone can live where there are not four defined and distinctive seasons. I love to see the desert and I love the beach but not everyday. Although you could take St. Louis summers. I would love to summer in Wisconsin or Michigan, then come back home about mid Sept. A girl can dream.

I am playing around in the studio.
Just kind-of sitting down and not really having a bead in mind, just doing what ever comes to mind. I made this bead in class with Brad Pearson and really like it so I am making more. I find that taking time to just play leads to finding new ideas. I think everyone should do it.

Lots of fun news. I have been asked to submit some beads to a project. I will let you know if it works out.

Ok so I was bummed that the Chicago thing didn't work out, but good news, all three of my glass beadmaking classes were accepted for Bead and Button 2012. I am super excited and how that each one will fill.
Bead and Button is such a great show. Lots of really great classes with teachers that are so good and talented. If you haven't been you should make the effort.
Milwaukee is a beautiful city and the weather is heaven. It has been super hot and then other times just sunny and 80. Great restaurants, fun classes and the retail show has tons of great vendors.
Hope to see you there.

Bummer dude

I was all set to go the Chicago for a really cool art walk in a downtown neighborhood. I had tons of jewelry ready to go and then...my dreaded hives popped up fast and furious. For the first time my tongue and throat got hives. It was just on one side but it was super scary. Long story I decided to stay home and be on the safe side.

On a good note I have tons of stuff to put in my Etsy store. I am slowly but surely getting it on there. A little bit each day.
More stuff tomorrow!

Oh and guess what...yep The Walking Dead premiers tonight. Zombies watch out!

Bead Table Wed.

Ha. I have seen all the beautiful spaces a lot of my fellow bead artist have. Beautifully appointed rooms where little treasures are artfully displayed, and projects carefully laid out. Someday I will carve out my space, but that's not today.
My Bead Table is my family room coffee table. All my stuff is scattered around the room with half done projects, and ideas of designs set to the side. I somehow like to work this way. It is better to have too much out than to little. Ideas come streaming into my head and I remember I have a spacer that would work perfect for this project, now I just have to find it.
I will carve out my space, cause my husband is going to shoot me if I don't. It will probably take weeks to organize but it will happen. Once I get organized I stay that way, it's just getting there that is the battle.

Great Class, Great students

Sometimes I am floored by how lucky I am. I had Brad Pearson teaching at my studio Third Degree Glass this weekend. The students were all at the stage where they could understand what Brad was teaching and then apply it to their work. Really great when a class just hits all the right notes and everything just works.
I am excited to start making jewelry for my show in Chicago coming up soon. I am getting lots of great ideas. I will make sure to take pictures and share them with you all.

ZOMBIES!!!!

I am still all about the coming Zombie Apocalypse. Ok maybe it's not really going to happen but a girl can dream. The new season of "The Walking Dead" on AMC starts in a couple of weeks. Eeeekkkk I can't wait.
I always wonder if I would be able to survive an apocalyptic event. You know like if the super flu broke out, aliens landing, meteors, the stuff that they make movies about. I would like to think I have enough of the tough genes and smarts to figure it out.
The only problem is if I could create. I would need to make beads. I wonder if I could make beads if aliens landed? I would be a real pain in the ass if I couldn't get on the torch.
Maybe I need to re-think this.

New Obsession

Dang it. I get so mad at myself when I get obsessed with a new bead shape. I just keep making them, and making them. Sometimes they work out like the Pod, but others have gone unnoticed by anyone but me. It's like I have to work it out of my system. Repeating it over and over until I move on. Might be a little OCD but oh well.

So the first thing I am loving are these bead colleges. I have three so far and I want one to become my new postcard for shows and to include a post card in my Etsy sales. The one pictured is the newest one.

And now we come to the next obsession...those little melon beads you see in the picture. Here is a closer picture of just the melon beads. You can see it's really just a riff off of the pod, just smaller, different shape but still the groves in the glass. I love the texture. They are yummy to hold in your hands and I can't wait to work with them.
I have only a set of 7 on my Etsy site so if you want them snap em up quick.

The show with the the St. Louis Lampworkers was a hit. I got to be next to Mar and we had a blast, or rather she had a blast giving me shit. I forgot to bring a calculator, ran out of sales slips, forgot a mirror and Mar came to my rescue. I did not expect to have a tons of sales given the economy, but I had several repeat customers and I had a great show. So much fun! We have lots of talented bead makers in St. Louis. Rock on girls.

The St. Louis Lampworkers Society are having their show tomorrow. I think it is our 9th show. It's going to be small but mighty. We have a lot of great artists, so if you are in the St. Louis area stop by.
I will be in Andersonville IL a suburb of Chicago for the Andersonville Arts Weekend Oct 14-16th. I will be at the store Turley Road. So if you are in the Chicago area stop by and see me. I will have tons of new beads and jewelry to see.

If I can offer any advice to fellow artist it is to keep an inspiration book. I went to the book store and got a nice blank book to fill with goodies. I have my own ideas that I have sketched, and I also cut out pictures from magazines that stir my creative juices. I found this picture on a Blog called The Daily Art Muse. It's a great site if you haven't been, go!
When ever I feel like my muse has left the building, I pull out my book. It's fun to see how I have progressed and re-occurring themes.

I have a local bead show coming up this weekend. It's with the St. Louis Lampworkers Society. It's a great little show and I get to see all my bead friends.

I have had several people ask when I was going to list more Pods. I finally got my butt in gear and photographed and edited the photos and on and on and on.
Really like the new ones, but of course I am working on some new styles too.
I think I am going to try and make a post card out of this shot. I like all the colors and shapes. Anybody have a good post card company they like?

Things have settled down and my Dad is back to good health. It was a very trying couple of months but after some changes with his meds and some things to keep an eye on he is doing so much better.

It's been so long since I regularly up-dated my blog. Lot's of great things happening, so lots to catch up on.

Oh it's been a looooong time since I have updated my blog. I feel so bad, but needed a break. I got back from the beadmakers convention called The Gathering. I had a wonderful time. I met new friends, and reconnected with old ones. I had wonderful dinners, and laughed our butts off. But best of all were the Presenters this year. My favorites were Sharon Peters great talk on finding inspiration. Sara Sally and her journey with art and how to assemble her beautiful glass corsages. JC Herrell and her early morning talk. I had the idea that we should all come in our PJ's with pillows and it was so fun. Better yet her talk was wonderful and so inspiring.
Look at that bead! It really is so peaceful and wonderful.
The last speaker was Robert Danick. Not a beadmaker, but boy did he give us great ideas for setting our beads!
Each speaker was great and the ISGB did a great job. Next year the Seattle area! I am hoping to go up early to travel around. Saving up my pennies now.

Whew it was a great weekend with lots of time on the torch and spending time with family. Gearing up for the Gathering which is like going to the holy land for a beadmaker. Lots of lectures, friends, glass, and just plain fun.
So I am hard at work making things to sell at the Bead Bazaar on Sat. So if you are near Louisville KY, stop by and see work from the best beadmakers in the county!

Childhood Memories.

When I was going up I lived in a sweet town called Webster Groves. Beautiful old homes with large oak trees and shady yards. It was hide and go seek, kick the can, and hordes of kids roaming the streets. Summer showers we would run out in the rain and jump in puddles.
On July 4th we had the best hometown parade. The local mounted girl scouts would ride by on their horses, Miss Webster contestants rode by on convertibles. When I was in high school I rode on a car waving to the crowd cause I was on the synchronize swimming team.
Then we had a 4 day carnival with rides, booths, and food. Everyone from the surrounding area would come to our town to celebrate the 4th. Our fireworks were the best. July 4th was really a favorite time growing up.

I constantly have dreams about end of earth kind of stuff. You know like aliens overtaking the earth, zombies, killer viruses, hey it could happen.
From gathering all the information (movies) it always seems the highways get jammed with cars and everyone is stopped and wandering around.
Hence the motorcycle. You can ride in between cars and on the side of roads etc. The only thing I haven't figured out is that everyone will be trying to knock me off said motorcycle. Got to work on that.

Where have I been? Teaching art kids camps at work of course. It has been a lot of work but sooo much fun. After the morning session the kids have a break before lunch, so we set up a four square court.
Oh my gosh I forgot how much fun four square is! The kids are having a blast and so are we.

We had a party at work tonight with pizza, beer, cupcakes and Yea, you know it, FOUR SQUARE! That's right a bunch of us played for a couple of hours. I laughed so hard I peed alittle!

Remember those summer nights playing kick the can and a HUGE game of hide and go seek? It was the whole neighborhood and we stayed out until dark. No parents watching our every move, no TV, no video games, just plain ole fun. Later we would catch fire flies, and have Popsicles, and fall into bed exhausted. Good times.

I have neglected my blog due to getting ready for Bead and Button. But it was well worth it. I have a butt load of beads to bring and a great class to teach. What some great eye candy? The first necklace is a graduated disk necklace made with Clio and Kalypso silver glass. It took forever to make, but it is stunning.

Ready for more? This one is also a graduated disk necklace with Multicolor light and drop dead gorgeous turquoise disk. I will have both of these necklaces with me on the "Meet the Teachers" night at Bead and Button which is this Wed. June 8th. Come and see them in person! I am off! See you all soon.

I took some much needed time off to spend time with family and get ready for Bead and Button. I leave this Mon. and my class is Tues. and then Meet the Teachers on Wed. Please stop by my table and say Hi if you are attending. I will not have a booth at the show, just my table at Meet the Teachers.

I am super frustrated. I am not one to promote myself too much, and find it hard to contact studio's to have me come and teach my class, but it looks like I may need too. I have students contact me though e-mails, phone calls, etsy, in person asking where I teach so they can take my class. You have no idea how many times I have contacted studios to teach and they say "we will keep you in mind". I guess I am not high enough on the totem pole. It is so hard to tell students sorry. What's a girl to do. Any suggestions would be welcomed! ARRGGGG.

I have neglected the blog for a while. My father has been in and out of the hospital for several weeks. He seems fine now, but at age 85 his heart is just not as strong as it used to be.
I think it's so hard to see your strong father, who took care of you when you were a child, grow older.

Mothers Day is a hard day for many of us who have lost their Moms. I was lucky. My Mom was one of my best friends. We would talk at least once a day, and see each other once or twice a week. We both woke up early in the morning so I knew I could call at 7 am and not wake her up. We would have our coffee and talk about the day. We shared our dreams and pains.

My heart aches when I see women with their Mom on their arms. Heads almost touching and a whispered conversation shared. I see them in the mall, at the garden, in a restaurant, along a street.

If you have your Mom with you give her a kiss from me.

Time to put my head down and get ready for Bead and Button. I have 7 lovely students signed up for my glass beadmaking class on Implosions. I am super excited and can't wait to meet up with a bunch of blog friends and all my bead buddies.

I do love spring. Even though I know the dreaded summer is soon to follow, spring still rocks. We have had lots of rain, days and days of it, but I love rain. I know it is soaking into the ground deep so the BIG trees have a lot of water. Everything is hues of green, and flowers are blooming.

At work we are planting trees and spiffing the place up. Everyday I am either re-potting, planting, raking, sweeping, or digging. I have wanted to plant trees at work for the longest time and we finally found time to do it. I spend my days outside in the sun, with cool breezes working my muscles to the max. At the end of the day it is so nice to feel exhausted from work with the satisfaction of a job done. I come home tired and happy, ok sometimes a little sore but in a good way.

This is such a great quote I had to post it. Sadly I reached out to an old friend. I was trying to mend fences. We both made some mistakes and I apologized but to no avail. So sad.

I think that to put yourself out there is so hard. But good things can come out of it sometimes. It takes courage and a knowledge that you tried. It's sad that some old wounds cannot be healed.

I don't work that way. Just can't hold onto anger or hurt. Takes too much energy. Being right or justified sometimes is not worth it. It's better to let it go and move on. Right on Bob Marley!

I feel like I haven't been able to blog in a while. I have had some hard realizations about my art and if I am living up to my expectations about it. I sometimes don't give it top priority, and it's my fault.
It's because I let my doubts as an artist, influence my confidence and my focus. If I don't believe in it, then it effects my work. I can't let outside influences let me doubt myself. My work is worthy, I am worthy. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

I love to find a new artist that just blows me away. Celine Charuau was featured on The Daily Art Muse blog. I wish I could read French, but does it really matter. All you have to do is look at her work and be inspired. Her medium is Polymer Clay, and wow she has pushed the envelope.

It's starting to get warm here in St. Louis. Soon it will be sticky and super hot...not my favorite time of year, but Bead and Button is coming up in June and at the end of July the Beadmakers Convention called The Gathering. This year it will be in Louisville KY. Such a great time with lots of good friends and beautiful beads to look at. If you live near by you should stop by the bead show on Sat. You will see some of the top beadmakers in the US. Really a treat.

My mind is reeling with ideas and shapes. How can I achieve them in glass, work them into my present work, yet make it different. I found a really cool blog that I am sure that many of you already know about. The Daily Muse. It is brimming with fine crafts and art. You can explore a variety of different mediums from pottery, glass, and metal to name a few.
I was so please to see one of my favorite ceramic artist Alice Ballards. Gee I wonder why she is one of my favorites. Her Pods are amazing and really send my creative juices over the edge.
Don't you love it when you look at another artist work and you feel moved, inspired. Isn't that really what we want as artist, to move those who look at our work.
Who inspires you. Who moves you to stretch your creative muscles, and work harder. I would love to hear from you.

Yep it's my birthday and I am 21 years old but my body is 53. I feel like I am 21 and probably act like I am 21 too. Good times.
I have filled my shop up with tons of goodies.
Some of you remember me making my flowers and I decided to try them again but they are smaller and have a Clio center. I used to make these all the time and stopped for awhile but decided to make some with new twist.
Super hot here in St. Louis. Makes me very cranky. I hate the heat. Can't stand it. Don't know how people live in the desert. Ick. No water, sand, dust, brown, no thanks.

Long time no post. Dang I have been busy. Lots of things going on at work, more TV interviews, meetings, classes, and getting ready for shows.
Do you get overwhelmed? I sure do. I need to put my nose to the grindstone and not look up for a couple of days. Problem is I have a wedding that I am doing flowers for this weekend. I have one bridal bouquet, 6 bridesmaids, 3 mothers small bouquets, 5 groomsmen corsages, 62 table arrangements, etc. I do have some help but I will be doing the main flowers myself. It is for dear friends and I can't wait to do this for them.
I have tons of stuff to put in my Etsy shop soon. Here is another Pod Pendant necklace. I am really liking these.

Well had to have some medical stuff done (no big deal just a routine colonoscopy....too much...over share...).

Took all day long to fill the Etsy shop. I have been making the beads but needed to sit down and take the time to photograph, edit photos, measure, name, then list.
I have made another Pod that is just mind blowing. It looks like it's on fire and I love the results. Funny thing about using this silver glass is that the results will never be the same. It's always beautiful but sometimes its really good.
I have been super busy with lots of good things happening. I have several bead sets going to some fun people so stay tuned to see whats up. Grab this one quick!

It was a very busy weekend with lots of fun, glass, and creating. Some of you have never seen a glass bead class. It is really a lot of fun, and very intense. All the students were super happy and their heads are swimming with lots of new ideas.
I need a day to decompress but

that's not going to happen. I am making new Podlettes and Pods to post on my Etsy site and just need to get some good photos, but by the time I get home the sun is down and the chance is gone. I need some good lighting so I can take photos anytime.
I do like the natural light so much better than bulbs.
I think I need to go to bed....

Dude, I fell hard. I was cleaning my guest bathroom for an artist staying with me at my home this weekend. She is teaching a Master Class at work, more later. Stupid me I had wet feet AND was standing on the edge of the tub cleaning the tiles up top and bam, on the floor.
I hit my butt, jammed my finger, hit my ribs, dang. My daughter came in and said "mom if you break your wrist, finger, or arm, that's your money maker" Isn't it weird that my income depends on my hands, not my brain, not my sparkling personality, my hands.

This weekend I have guest bead artist Jennifer Geldard
teaching 9 students at the studio. A whole weekend of glass beadmaking...heaven. The class is on Sat and Sun.
I always love having artist in. They give me a creative kick in the butt. I love to see if I can translate their skill sets into my beads.
Jennifer is one of those artist who is very giving, supportive, and encouraging. I will take some pictures so you can join in. I leave you with bead porn.

A new blog idea.

I have been kicking around an idea for my blog. I want to focus on my followers more. Those who have taken the time to read and then decided to follow. Each week I will be picking out a follower of my blog who's art I really connect too.
It's important in our art world to acknowledge other artists. We gain so much more if we focus on not just our own work but the work of others.
My first artist is Keirsten Giles. I found out about Keirsten though the Bead Soup blog hop run by Lori Anderson. She had stopped by my blog to take a peek at my Bead Soup necklace, and I stopped by hers.
I was blown away. It is unique and very well made. I think that's the first thing I noticed. The attention to detail. Each wrap perfectly placed, the wire with a perfect patina, tumbled and then polished. I think it is really evident in the copper/brass bracelet.
You can find her work on her Etsy site. I am so glad to have met her in the cyber world. We plan on working together on some projects in the future so stay tuned.

I believe that reaching out to other artists only helps us all. The more we support each other the better we all become.

A couple post ago I talked about where we get our inspirations. I showed a picture on the Russian Onion Domes (really that's what they call them, I checked).

Well those things really got me thinking and I became obsessed, hum imagine that, me obsessed with a bead. Well the next day in the studio I was determined to make it work. Some were easy, some not so much. But it really did push me and now I have a whole new area to explore. I present my Russian Onion Domes. See the one over on the left..that one is a booger to make. You would have to understand glass to see why but stringer work is hard enough without having to lay it down in a complicated pattern. I am getting better so just wait.
So then I thought how cool to make them into a pendant so here is the pendant (I will have this one up on Etsy tonight.)
I have a feeling you will see a lot more of these in the next couple of weeks.
Oh and thanks a lot Erin for encouraging me. Now see what you started!

BEAD SOUP IS HERE!!!

It's here, it's time! Welcome if this is your first time at my blog. Hope you enjoy my Soup. My partner was Kristen Latimer. She sent me a wonderful lampwork focal that just popped with color. Really a great bead. Here is a picture of my Bead Soup before.
Here is what I did with it. I added a steel chain, some seed beads, and linked all three stands together. It was a lot of fun, and I love the colors.
I can't wait to look around at all the participating blogs and look at all the wonderful work everyone is doing.

Where do you find your inspirations.

Many times people ask me where I come up with bead ideas or jewelry designs. I have heard so many people say they have lost their Muses and fight to come up with fresh and new ideas.
My best advice is to look around. I look to nature, art, buildings and history.
My very best advice is to keep a inspiration journal. Get a fun blank book and fill it with sketches, pictures and ideas that pop into your head. Make sure you write it down! I don't know how many ideas I have had that I have forgotten. Look though magazines and clip out pictures use a glue stick and paste them in your book

See if you can use these images as a jumping off point for a new design.
The hydrangeas in the top photo have been on my mind for a while. I love the colors and HAVE to think of a way to interpret that into my work.
Oh and aren't these pods to die for. Yummy.
The shapes in the onion domes of Russia are very similar to the shape of my Pods. Look at the way they are decorated. I could totally do it in glass and can't wait to try.

Do you sometimes make a piece that you want to make over and over again, changing it just a little each time cause you love the colors and feel of it. I love jewelry design when you find something you can play with and change, add and take away, and each time it's different.
Well we all know that's how I feel about my Pods and Podlettes (new name cause a friend is using Podlets).
I post that I wasn't that excited about silver glass a couple of months ago. Well, changed my mind. This stuff is so cool when you figure it out. I try and use it in different ways so it doesn't look like all the other silver glass beads out there. Put my spin on it. I just don't think I want to ever give up this bead. I think it is here to stay.

I know right...two posts in one day. Who would have thunk.
I just got done photographing these copper green podlets.
Aren't they super cute. It is a beautiful day to take photos. Lots of sun and I spent the morning taking pictures of tons of beads. They will be up on my Etsy site tomorrow, cause I have to work until 9:00. Long day but lots of fun.

I am not a fluffy, ribbon and bows kind of gal. Not that there is anything wrong with it, its just not how I roll.
But I do have a soft spot for people who Believe. People who put themselves out there and give from the bottom of their toes. I strive to be that person, both in my dealings with others and my art.
You really do have to believe that what you are doing, making, thinking do matter and someone will see it and recognize it.
So I thought I would start a little blog and had belief that someone would read it and connect, and if I put myself out there it would reach others.
So Believe that what you do does matter, and others will notice it. Take the risk, push your envelope.

Cool Photo Site

Heather over at Humblebeads Blog has been blogging about the photo site Picnik. It is a site that adjust your pictures and does some really cool stuff. I have been using it for a couple years but never used the Create section so I thought I would try it out. It's very cool and you can use it for free (you can only load 5 pictures at a time). It is inexpensive if you want to load as many pictures possible.
I used to just load 5 pictures at a time but now I think I am going to bite the bullet and sign up for a year.

I have been super bad, in fact terrible in my posting of my wonderful bead soup that I received from my partner, Kristen Latimer.
I got my bead soup right away and it's beautiful.
I really like the colors, different shapes and types of beads. I already have big plans! Stay tuned.

Baby Pods!

I had someone on LE (a glass beadmakers forum) come up with the name podlets for these cute buggers. I made a bunch of them and sent some to the lovely Lori Anderson for her monthly Cup Of Bead Soup.
I had a blast picking out some super cool beads to go with all the glass beads I sent her. I love an eclectic mix of beads. No simple stuff for me. It's great to have a mix of complimentary colors, metals, pressed glass, wood, bone and lampwork.
I like the movement and texture of a piece that contains all those elements.
What turns you on when it comes to designing a piece? The colors, the glass, the metal?

This work thing gets in the way.

I could use a couple hours of taking pictures of new work, load it onto my Etsy, work on my Bead Soup project, start writing class info for my Bead and Button class, and then take care of my family. Dang work gets in the way.
I hope to make some new work and have some cool ideas but really need to clear my plate first. I do love having a pile of beads to play with. It is quite relaxing and gets those creative juices going. My favorite time to bead...Sat afternoon with a scary movie on TV. Heaven.

Twisted Day Four Earrings!

I love these. They really pushed me to figure out how to rework my design. I have thumbs therefore I am smarter than the wire!
To build the earrings you use a heavy gauge wire and slip the coil over the wire. See the ending of the earrings, I added a little dangle, then I wanted a gradual build of smaller to larger and incorporate some different metals, but I didn't have metal findings that fit over the wire AND the coil. So I put the findings over the heavy gauge wire, then I slipped the coil on. I did have large hole beads that fit over both the wire and the coil. I am a stickler for earring shapes. I like to add small findings on the end and gradually build up the shapes, instead of a putting something large, then small, then large again, then medium, too jerky, not fluid enough.

UPDATE:

I am going to pick the winners of all three projects tomorrow night instead of tonight. My little family is going though a hard time right now. We are lucky that during tough times we stand strong and united so we can carry the burden and stress. I am so blessed that my husband, son and daughter are committed to each other and when one needs more support we pull together. We will be fine and will get though it.
Also I want to thank each and everyone of you who have followed this little Twisted game and left such lovely comments. It really means the world to me. You guys rock.

Twisted Day Three Pendant Give Away UPDATE

So I had to do this one since this was the project that Kerry used for my pendant in her book. I decided to change it up a little cause that's how I roll. It's very rare for me to do something exactly like what's in a book cause I want to add my spin on it. So I added some dangles to the loop and put it on a chain instead of the seed beads in the project. I do think I will do another one similar to the one in the book but I do like how this turned out.
I love my flat pods and really wanted to show them off.
So this is the next project that will be up for the give away!

UPDATE
For me it is so important to share information, so I was very happy to see Kerry post some advice and I wanted to make sure that everyone saw it so here it is, right from the Authors mouth! Thanks Kerry!
A little tip about using the colored wire in this type of design... the color might rub off. When I used your large pendant as a focal, I didn't leave a lot of room for it to move, so if any color was removed, you wouldn't be able to see it. Here, there is room to wiggle, so you might see a little wear. I think that adds a bit of depth, personally. But thought I should let you know. If you are going to have anything rub against the wire, I would use sterling or copper... something not coated.

Twisted Day Two Mistakes and Redo's

So I twisted the day away (in between shoveling and salting the driveway etc..)
This is fun BUT I did make a lot of mistakes and I love Kerry's suggestion to start with copper wire before moving on to the Sterling Silver wire.
First picture is of my mistakes, cause there is a learning curve.

Next is of the first project, the bracelet. I have been thinking about doing this style for a while to show one way to use my beads. It was fun, and gave me some ideas for other projects. So this will be one of the give-a-ways!
Also I have added a picture of how I ended the bracelet. I made a chain and used a lobster clasp.
This is a great way to end a bracelet. The bracelet will fit a wide range of sizes. For shows it is great because you won't lose a sale because the bracelet is too small or too big. If you don't want a handmade chain simply crimp it to a 1/2 inch or less length of silver chain. Add a little wired bead on the end and presto you have a adjustable bracelet!

Twisted Baby

Well I am all snowed in so I thought I would have some fun on my blog and I would love for you to join me.

First the game:

I was so honored to contribute to Kerry Bogart's beautiful book. It turned out great and I couldn't wait to try out some fun projects...but I loaned out the book to excited students, and somewhere along the way it has been lost. I am so bummed cause it was signed by Kerry and was very special to me. BUT I was not going to let that stop me.

A winter storm was a perfect day for me to gather up the things I needed to have my Twisted Day! So before the storm got really bad I went to Hobby Lobby were the wire was 1/2 price AND bought a new Twisted book.
So I have my book, my tools, and my beads.
So here is the game. I will be making 3 different projects using my beads, taking pictures of them to post on my Etsy store so people can see some ideas, THEN for those of you that post a comment on my blog I will be pulling names and three of you will win the finished projects! Post on your blog, facebook and you will have your name added two more times! Make sure you let me know.

My Bad but dreaming of Tucson.

I owned a bead store. Kind of sounds like the line in the movie Out of Africa. It was a great bead store. Tons of super cool pearls, czech glass, semi precious, African trade beads, silver, etc. I had a 9 torch studio in the back where you could learn bead making or take a class with nationally recognized artist. My sister and I owned it and we called it Sorella Beads (means sister in Italian).

Every year we would make the trip to Tucson for our buying trip. It was heaven. Wonderful weather, beautiful desert scenery and show after show of beads. The whole city is alive with it.

Have you been to the Tucson Bead shows? For anyone involved with beads it really is Mecca. It does not get any better.

It brings back some fond memories of my sister. We had a blast. We would take time to see friends, eat, explore Tucson, and just spend time together. I was our time. I lost her 3 years ago to ovarian cancer and this time of year reminds me of our trips. I just ache to go back. It's just not in my budget, but maybe one day. A girl can dream.

Oh baby it's cold outside, but I love it. I was shoveling the driveway and it was heaven. Getting that heart rate up and not sweating like a pig. I am a winter girl and I just can't think of ever living in a place of perpetual summer. I like to visit those places, beaches, deserts and understand their unique beauty, but no thanks. Give me trees that are young and green in the spring, shady in the summer, glorious colors in the fall and bare and stark in the winter. I am planning on camping with my hubby this spring and early summer. I ache to be out in the woods by a stream. I need to start planning now!

Yea you might notice that there might be random cat hair or dog hair in my photos. I don't need a signature murrini to place in my beads, you just need to look hard for animal hair.
Every time I set up my photo cube in jumps the kitten or as we like to call her "the shitten". Little turd. She looks so dang cute, it's hard to kick her out. One time I left the booth up, we were looking all over for the cat. Couldn't find her anywhere. I walked by the photo cube and there she sat, looking at me like I was insane.
Someone once told me Dogs have owners, Cats have help.

Bead and Button Sign Ups!

Bead and Button sign ups are open! I am so proud to be on the faculty and teaching my Soft Glass Implosions class.
This is going to be a great class. Not only will you learn how to do soft glass implosions but I will be teaching ton's of cool stuff that you can use in the beads you are making now.

I have been making beads for 14 years and teaching for 11years. I can figure out why things aren't working and how to make them work. I have tons of tips and tricks to teach. Plus I teach a fun class.

Last year Andrea came and taught at my studio and showed up with Zimmerman Purple Rose Powder

Ahhh beginnings. I am ready for 2011, both feet, jumping in, bring it on. I also am ready to get back to work at the studio. I miss all my work buddies.

I am ready to get into the studio and try some new things, flex some muscles. I want to take a couple of weeks and work on some exciting stuff. I want to make a bunch of mistakes and learn from them. If you are not screwing stuff up, then you are not trying hard enough. I think the only time I ever really learned cool stuff was because of big ole fat mistakes. You know like working on a bead and not constructing it correctly and losing your fine detail CAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE ADDED LAST, ask me how I know...

So bring on 2011 and lets all make some BIG mistakes.

Well it finally happened! My son just got engaged! I am so excited and proud. My son and his girlfriend have been dating for 8 1/2 years, since they were 14.
Celsi has become part of our family already, but now it's different, she is my sons fiance.
Now I can tell people "this is my son's fiance".
They have been a blast to watch growing up. Both have been so wonderful. Great students, beautiful people, and wonderful adults.
I could not be happier.

Ok so this is a problem. I have too many beads. I made these bead sets for Bead and Button 2010. Did I tell you how bad that show was..it was bad. I came home with loads of beads, which I promptly lost and then made more for another show. Well guess what I found this morning, yup the beads I lost. Now I'm feeling a bit sad.
They are a reminder that my stuff is not selling. It kind of feels like a slap in the face. Here you go Libby, tons of beads STILL here, not being sold or used. It makes me wonder are they really good enough or is it because I have not made an effort to really sell them.
So here is an early New Years Resolution, get these beads on my Etsy store, and start to promote more!
So look for some challenges with bead give aways to see what you would do with my beads.

So get this...I still haven't bought one Christmas gift yet. Ha. Yep, that's usually how I roll. Get ideas and then try and get it done in a couple of days. Every year. I think I will try and do it earlier but it just doesn't work.

It really doesn't feel like Christmas unless I see certain shows, the old Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer with Burl Ives, the cartoon Grinch not the new one with Jim Carry (sp), and the best...Charlie Browns Christmas. I am not into Frosty the Snow Man, that one just never did it for me.
